NEW POTATO PRICES
CONTROLS LIFTED FOR NEXT SEASON (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 22. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr C. M. Bowden) announced to-day that the Government had decided there should be no price control on the new crop next spring, this decision having been made on the recommendation of the Director of Marketing (Mr Leicester Webb). Growers also had asked that then* new crops should not be subject to ceiling prices, as new potatoes were a risky crop and they had not the benefit of a guaranteed price such as applied to the more easily-grown and more certain main crop.
“Growers in early districts will soon be starting to make preparations for planting new potatoes to be marketed next spring, and by making this announcement the Government has given them time in which to prepare for a greater area,”- said Mr Bowden.
“This year’s main crop, which ' is available from March to November, continues subject to price control and should be in good supply. A recent survey indicated that the area is greater than last year’s and that the yield is much higher. “It is expected that the lifting of price control on new potatoes will encourage the planting of a greater area, so that a sufficient supply may be assured at reasonable prices.” .
