MURUPAPA PAPER MILL
PROJECT FOR PRIVATE ENTERPRISE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 22. The establishment of a large pulp and paper industry at Murupara, 40 miles from Rotorua, was no longer primarily intended as a State undertaking, said the .Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman) after an inspection of the proposed sites for the mill and township. Mr Goosman said it was his opinion that an undertaking of this nature was especially suited to private enterprise. The integrated sawmill and pulp mill should be particularly suitable for private development, especially by the concerns that would utilise the end production of the mill, said Mr Goosman. The Government, of course, had a vital interest in the undertaking, and the Ministry of Works would be especially concerned with providing a railway link between Murupara and Edgecumbe and the construction of a deep-water port in the Bay of Plenty. It had also taken an active part in planning a new town, estim ated to accommodate up to 10,000 people when the mill was in full operation. Mr Goosman said the estimated cost of the whole project, £25,000,000, included the building of the railway and the developing of the port.
