NEW CONDUCTOR
NATIONAL ORCHESTRA (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 22. Mr Michael Andrew Bowles, B.Mus., was to-day appointed conductor of the National Orchestra. The announcement was made by the Minister in charge of Broadcasting (Mr F. W. Doidge).
Mr Bowles, - who graduated with honours from the National University of Ireland, has been for eight years director of music and principal conductor of the Irish Broadcasting Service. •He founded the Dublin public symphony concerts given by the Irish radio orchestra.
Mr Bowles has had repeated invitations 1,0 appear as guest conductor with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Orchestra, the Gothenburg Radio Orchestra (Sweden), the Belgian National Orchestra, and the Italian Chamber Orchestra in Rome.
Hs organised and directed the Irish Broadcasting Choir, and has conducted many major choral works. He has been responsible generally for the musical programmes of the Irish Broadcasting Service. He is 40 years of age and married. His appointment is for three years, and he will take over the orchestra soon.
