CHILDREN ALONE IN HOUSES
DANGER OF FATAL FIRES (P.A.) GREYMOUTII, Feb. 22. Although representations had been made some years ago seeking steps to prevent parents leaving children unattended in their homes, nothing had been done, said Mr W. Hewitt, of Alexandra, at the annual conference of the United Fire Brigades’ Association in Reefton. When it was stated that the matter had been referred to the police, Mr Hewitt said that apparently it had had no effect. “It is still going on, and we have had instances from time to time of children being left by parents in houses which have gone up in flames, with infants being burned to death or seriously injured,” he added. “There is a moral obligation on the Child Welfare Office and the police in this matter, and the executive will again raise the issue with these authorities,” said the chairman (Superintendent C.
