SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONALS
GOVERNMENT PLANS CLASSIFICATION
CAPE TOWN, Feb. 21. South Africans will be 'registered and classified as “native,” “coloured,” or “European,” under the terms of the Population Registration Bill, which was given a first reading in the House*, of Assembly yesterday. Europeans are defined as persons who in appearance and repute obviously are Europeans. Natives are defined as persons who in fact or by general appearance and repute are members of aboriginal races of African tribes. All others will be classified as coloured.
A register will be compiled as soon as possible. after the 1951 census. Identity cards will then he issued to everyone over the age of 16 years. The bill, which will come up for its second reading on March 6, is likely to be hotly opposed. It Avill be alleged that it is designed as an instrument of racial segregation.
