SCHOOL SPORTS

COUNTY ASSOCIATIONS MEET Congratulations to all sections on a highly successful past season were extended by the president, Mr J. Trevor Thomas, at the annual meeting of the Ashburton County Schools’ Sports Association last evening.

The speaker pointed out that the season 1946-47 was completed with a cash credit of £67 and £IOO in National Savings, a total of £167; at the end of the following season ,the figures were £37 and £l7O, a total of £207; while, for the season just closed, the amounts were £77 and £l7O, a total of £247. This was achieved, too, in spite of the extra cost of sending teams to Timaru for the All-Canter-bury tournament and to Amberley for basketball. • “In my opinion,” said Mr Thomas, “wo are in a wonderful financial position but these funds must be carefully and closely guarded, for my mind goes back to the years when we were insolvent in money, but had the asset of officials full of enthusiasm.” Gate takings at the. annual sports last year amounted to £l7 12s, a new record, while there was another record in the fact that 28 of the 32 schools in the county registered last., season. Mr Thomas congratulated the schools for parading their pupils m the school colours, and stated that the march-past was wonderfully interesting and instructive, also a feature which must be improved from time to time, as opportunity occurred. The speaker warmly thanked those who helped at the stall, and mentioned that the takings rose as follows: £1947 £lOl, 1948 £126, 194„ £l3l. Ice cream cost, over the same period, rose from £35 to £6O. A motion of thanks to the hon. secretary and treasurer (Mr G. P. Mitchell) for his excellent work was carried. Officers were elected as follow: Patron Mr J. H. Grigg, president Mr Thomas, secretary and treasurer Mr Mitchell, hon. auditor Mr E. Loftus.
