AUSTRALIAN GAMES TEAM
SPECTACULAR WELCOME IX SYDNEY SYDNEY, Feb. 17. The city to-day gave a spectacular welcome to Australia’s Empire. Games team. Only 34 members of tile team marched through the city, but cheering crowds lined the streets 10 deep and filled every window along the route. • i Nine women athletes were headed by Shirley Strickland and Marjorie Jackson. At the Town Hall the team was welcomed by the English team, which did not march because it had given away its hatbands, ties and badges to New Zealand friends and did not want to appear in public improperly dressed. “Our party is in a most embarrassing position,” said the English team manager, Mr Beresford, before the march. “We have had to decline the invitation to march because we gave our official hatbands and ties to friends in New Zealand as souvenirs. Actually we were delighted at being invited to march.” The party appeared at a civic reception given in their honour, by the Lord Mayor, Alderman O’Dea.
