CHINESE STEAMER LEAVES SYDNEY
FREED FROM ARREST BY COURT SYDNEY, February 17. The Chinese steamer, Union Builder, cleared the heads last night after the Chief Justice in Equity (Mr Justice Roer) had freed her from arrest. ■* Mr Justice Roper refused to deal with the case in which the United States Government tried to prevent the ship from leaving Sydney. He dismissed the injunction which had prevented her from moving, ruling that he had no jurisdiction over the affairs of any foreign nation. The United States Government. alleged that the Chinese Government, the owners of the ship, had defaulted on the mortgage over the ship to the amount of 506,966 dollars. The steamer sailed for Melbourne with a cargo of steel rods. The United States Government is reported to be afraid that this and other ships sold to the Nationalist Government will eventually fall into the hands of the Chinese Communists.
