RACE WEEKS IN CHRISTCHURCH
CRITICISM BY LABOUR PARTY (P.A.) WILLING TON, Feb. 16. “The decision of the National Government to permit week-day racing in Wellington and Christchurch comes strangely from those who consistently advocate greater production in New Zealand,” ' said Mr A. J. McDonald, national secretary of the Labour Party, in a statement to-day. “On the one hand we have the Minister of Railways (Mr W. S. Coosman) complaining that railway losses are due to the 40-hour five-day week and on the other the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. A. Bodkin) is prepared to permit further interference with the normal working week by the introduction of racing on weekdays.” Mr McDonald said the worst effect of mid-week racing would be upon production, both primary and secondary, at a time when there was need for much greater expansion.
