MAN ATTACKED WITH RAZOR
ACCUSED ACQUITTED ON GROUND OF INSANITY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 16. After a short retirement the jury returned a verdict of not guilty on the ground of insanity against Ivan Arthur Lawrence ,a labourer, aged 22, who was charged before Mr Justice Callan in the Supreme Court with assaulting Richard Sinclair so as to cause him actual bodily harm. For the Crown, Mr S. Cleal said the alleged offence took place in the Y.M.C.A. on the morning of October 25. 'The accused made an attack with an open cut-throat razor on a man with whom he was sharing a room. While in custody the accused had been examined by a psychiatrist who would give evidence that at the time of the offence the accused was not capable of understanding the nature and quality of his act. The jury found the assault was committed by the accused but acquitted him on the grounds of insanity. His Honour ordered the accused to be detained at the Auckland Mental Hospital until the pleasure of the Minister of Justice w*s known.
