HOCKEY.
MEN’S COMPETITION CLOSED. WAKANUI WIN SENIOR GRADE. The Management Committee of the Ashburton Men’s Hockey Sub-associa-tion met last evening, the president (Mr A. C. Vincent) presiding. It was decided to close the, competitions, and to declare the Wakamu Club the winners of the senior grade and the Baring Square Club the winners of the junior grade. The Management Com ipittee extended its congratulations to these teams, both of which have unbeaten records. It was decided to hold an open five-a-side competition on the yankee principle as last year, the grades being senior, intermediate and schoolboys, and the entry fee 10s, 5s and 2s 6d. A set of medals will ho given the winning team, provided that there are three oi more entries. , , It was decided to request clubs to nominate players wlio would be avail-* able to play on September 2, 3 and 4 in the Quatre-bras Cup competitions. Permission was given the Wakanui Club to make arrangements with Timaru about the player of the Walker Hall Shield match It was decided to postpone all matches on August* 21 and September
4, on the occasion of the Springboks’ visit to Canterbury.
It was decided to play trial games next Saturday as’ follow: — Senior grade—Wakanui v. The Rest. Junior grade—Baring Square v. The Rest.
In view of the selection of representative teams all players are requested to turn out.
