The Sydney “Sun” states that although a general stoppage of work on the coalfields has not yet been ordered, 3190 miners on the northern and southern fields are on, strike, and to-day stoppages at other collieries have brought the total to 4635. Meanwhile efforts are being made to settle the major dispute about , wages and hours of work. , At the compulsory conference, which opened this afternoon before Mr Justice Cantor, of the State Industrial Commission, Mr Justice Cantor appealed to the parties to try to avoid a complete hold-up, and adjourned the conference in' the hope that the minor dis - putes at the Broken HSU proprietary, Ltd.’s collieries would he settled.
It was subsequently announced that the efforts had been successful. Mr Justice Cantor later announced that a tentative agreement had been reached for reopening, and the resumption of work at all the Broken Hill Proprietary’s collieries.
