THE COMPETITIONS.
LARGE INCREASE IN ENTRIES. OVER THIRTY PER CENT. MORE. The interest in the forthcoming festival of the Ashburton Competitions Society is widespread, as shown by the large number of entries received, 975, an increase of over 30 per cent, on last year. The new schools sections have drawn very good entries and some good talent will no doubt be found. Eight entries have been received in the section for verse speaking choirs, a new feature at competitions.
Owing to the large number of entries, a considerable proportion of the national dancing and elocutionary classes will be held in the Church of Christ Hall. A well-wisher has donated two medals for the best competitors, 8 years and under, in the Irish Jig class. Accommodation is required for competitors, and the secretary would be glad to hear of any one able to assist in tins respect.
