THE HIGH SCHOOL.
REPORT BY THE HEADMASTER. PROGRESS OF FARM WORK. The Ashburton High School Board of Governors met this morning, when there were present Messrs J. W. Bowden (in the -chair), J. Brown, W. H. Woods, E. H. Orr, F. Frampton and W. T. Lill. The headmaster (Mr E. A. Cockroft) reported that the roll number stood at 139 hoys and 106 girls, making a total of 245. The Education Fellowship Conference was attended by almost the whole staff. The lectures given by the various visitors were exceedingly helpful and interesting. They were given to broaden the outlook on education generally, and I think they succeeded. The fresh views on education brought from England, Finland, the United States, Canada and South Africa could have only one result, and that a beneficial one. An opportunity will be taken to have trees planted on the farm by members of the lower classes as part of Arbor D'ay celebrations. Farm Account. —* The ewe's w r ere crutched early in the month, the boys making a very satisfactory job. There were now 20 early lambs but the main lambing w r ould not commence until the last week of this month. Team work had been held up by wet weather, but every oportunity of working the ground when conditions were suitable had been taken. It might be necessary to get some of the work done by a contractor in order to get cultivation completed in time for spring sowings. The financial statement showed that there was a credit balance of £ls 15s. The secretary stated that he had that morning received £54 2s lOd, balance due on wheat sold.
