CLEARING WILLOWS FROM RIVER. COUNTY COUNCIL’S DECISION. The Ashburton County Council has decided to co-operate with the Government, following the representations of Mr H. E. Herring, M.P., in regard to the employment of as many men as possible from registered unemployed in the work of clearing the willows from the Ashburton river bed. It was found, after an inspection was carried out of the work done two years ago by relief workers that the willows which were barked and treated with so.lt petre had all died, not one having survived. As soon as the fairway of the river bed which should be cleared lias been taken by the Public Works Engineer (Mr T. G. Beck), the work will be started. The County Council will make every endeavour to give employment to as many men as possible from those available.
