AMERICA WINS THE DOUBLES. DECISIVE OVERHEAD SHOTS. DESPERATE BATTLE IN FOURTH. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Dav, 9.25 a.m.) LONDON, July 26. The United States won the doubles m the challenge round of the Davis Cup contest, against England (holders). The challengers have now won one single and the double, against one single. The match to-day resulted: J. D. Budge and G. Mnko, defeated C. R. D. Tuckey and F. H. D. AVilde, 6-3, 7-5, 7-9, 12-10. The Englishmen were virtually a scratch pair owing to the retirement of G. P. Hughes. ; Play was vigorous in the first set, which the Americans won owing to;the greater decisiveness of their overhead shots. .-.- /. u- * . - Both sides were erratic- in -the second eet. The games went with the service to 5-5, when the Americans ‘broke Wilde’s service and Mako, held liis; for tile. Set. >■;; ‘ - j The struggling dourly against the Americans’ greater allround, incisiveiiess, took' the lead ! on their service 5-4, 6-5, 7-6, ; ‘B-7' in 'the third set.. Then, .volleying .finely,. they captured Mako’s service to win the, set 9-7. " .>•.< i . A desperate battle was witnessed in the fourth set. The games-'were even until the 15th;' when Wilde ‘lost .the service after two deuces. Mako held four m'atch points pn, his service but Britain won the game with a final lucky lob. Tuckey, 'hitherto"Serving excellently and scoring many his service for the first time in thp match in the 21st gamo, after which Budge rattled America' home with 'ia love game.
