COUNTY COUNCIL HELPS THE HUTMENT SCHEME.
I Messrs J. Watson, J. Cow, and P. L. | Orr waited-on the Ashburton County i Council meeting to-day. They stated : that a committee had been formed in Ashburtoniibr tlio purpo&oof providing a hutment from Ashburton for .the ■ use of soldiers nt tho front, and asked for a donation from the Council towards the cost of the hutrncnt. The deputation statod that the cost would bo £600, and h was thought by the committee that if tho Council gave' a load.-, in the mat tor tho sum required would soon bo forthcoming. The chairman t,aid his sympathies wore with the deputation.. Tho Council had-already dona tod sums in response to various appeals, and ho felt sare it would give «. liberal donation i towardstho hutment. Ho considered the Coun-vY cil should do its duty in regard to V '•heso appeals, because he realised thaj^i' whiles thcro; jv'ore many generous givers in tho Comity, thorowerc ethers who could' only be' got at ■ through the rates. Tho Council decided unanimously to vote £300. - '
