DUNEWN October 3.
At the sitting of tho Arbitration Court' to-day Mr Smith (Union Company) raised, a question bearing on apprenticeship and tho absence. of apprentices on compulsory jMJjfcary service, lie said that engintJoPEapprcnticee wore oompeH'ed to Herti% >p« years apprenticeship to qualify to Sft for examination. It could not be met by four years' apprenticeship and one year's military service. Mr Justice Stringer: It is a very important question. Legislation i 8 the only thing that can put the matter on a proper tooting. Something might tie done under the JWar Regulations. The only thing the Court can do is to bring tho matter under the notice of the Government again and ask if it is possible to do something to meet those cases.
Mr Smith nlso referred to tho time spent on compulsory military service counting as part of - apprenticeship, pointing out the difficulties likely to arise if employers wero compelled to pay journeymen's wages for the extra time epent before an employee- could sit for examination. It was decided that the Inspector of Awards and Mr Smith should submit a statement of tho cases to the Court for interpretation. ,
