LOWCLIFFE.

One of the most enthusiastic gatherings ever held in the Lowclifte district took place on "Wednesday evening, when a farewell social was tendered to Corporal Walter Rogers and Private Alex. McLauchlan, who are leaving on active service, and who aro home on final leave. The school was crowded, Mr C. E. Norrish presided. The proceedings opened , with the singing of, tho National Anthem. ■ ; A splendid programme was contributed by the ..following:—Songs, Mrs J. Brown, Miss lt-ogers, Messrs 'J. Brown, R. Ford, Rogers, and McLean; pianoforto solo. Miss Galder; violin J solo. Miss L. Ford; recitation, Joyce j Hawkins. Mr McLean's singing was greatly appreciated, and he had to respond to several encores. Mrs Brown I and Misses Rogers and Ford played the accompaniments. During an interval- in the programme, tho chairman gave a short address, in which he referred to tfie popularity of Messrs McLaughlin and Rogers. The chairman's remarks were endorsed by " Miss Mclver, the local school-teacher, who presented Corporal Rogers with a toilet outfit, and Private McLauglilan. with a safety razor. j Tho departing soldiers replied, thanking the people of Lowcliffe for their kindness to them. Mr Ford proposed, and Mr Price seconded, ihat a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to every one who had in any way..helped to make tho evening so'successful, the motion being carried unanimously. Supper, provided by the ladies, was then partaken of. The school was than cleared, and the young people joined in Maying games i'or some time.
