Ashburton Markets.
MESSBS FRIEDtANDEB BROS. Messrs Friedlander Bros, report upon the live stock for the week ending Wednesday, February 15 :—The Ashburton yards were v'cll filled by sheep of all classes. The attendance of buyers was' good. Buainejs done during the day was good, all sheep meeting with good competition at prices in advance of those.lately reported. The fat pens were mostly filled with merino ewes and wethers, and a few pens with crossbred ewes. Merino ewes sold at from 6s Id, 7s, up to 7s W, which last price we obtained for two pens sent forward by Mr D. Johnston, of Wakvnui. Merino wethers brought 6a, 6s 3d, and up to 8s 6d; crossbred ewes, lOs 3d, and two pens were withdrawn at 10s i 6d. ' There was a splendid line of crossbred ; freezing sheep sent forward by Mr Samuel Brown, which "reached 16s Id. In store l sheep several lines of gpod crosrbred twoi booths were entered, apd sold at 13s lOd and Us sdi There was a good entry of crossbred lambs whiqh were we.ll competed for, at pripes ranging from |0s to Jis sd. A line of two-tooth first-cross ewes, rather small, sold at 13* (M. The enquiry for this class of sheep is very strong, and at the. present; moment we could plage several lots at "full inarlfpt rates. Kwe» and laqibs are selling well. A line of merino (with failing mouths) with 100 per cent of lambs sold at 7s 6d each. Crossbred ewes with lambs sold at 8s sd. Old crossbred ewes made 10s 6d each. In cattle we had a full entry ot beef, which met with good competition from the local trade. Tuwdny, February 14:—As evidence ; tl»t harvesting is now almost completed intbe>. district, the market at the Ashburton yards was very well attended, and a large yarding of sheep was, brought forward, the totals reaching 5186 sheep and 10 cattle. The majority of the entries consisted of ewes and laivbs and weaned lamb*, with a few lines of merino and far crossbred ewes. The fur pens were chiefly occupied with merino ewes and wethers and also fat crossbred ewes, for which there was only a moderate demand and listless bid* ings by the trade. For all descriptions of store sheep there was good enquiry, although'price* in many oases did,not quite reach owners' exalted expectations, I'akiug the sale throughout, satis* - factory business was done, ana the bulk of ' the entries changed hands. Croasbreds , 1 realised from 12s to 16«; ewe*, 10s to 13s 9d; merino ewes, 4s lo 4s 9d—acoordiog to ; age and condition; merino wethers, up to 8s 9d; crossly -' t>wea and lambs, all counted; 8s sd; cro ; ,- red lambs, 8s Mto lls 6d. We sold 26 crowbrvd ewes, 12s; 204 crossbred ewes, wtih 193 lambs, 8a sd, all counted ; 81 crossbred ewes and 81 lambs, all counted, 8s 4d ; 26 crossbred ewes, l?s. "' We have also sold during the week privately, 440 lambi, 10s } 100 fat merino wethers, 10s 6d; 2500 sound mouthed merino ewes, at a satufactory figure. At the auction xhi Tuesday, attention was drawn by us to the arrangement* made for the conveyance and accommodation of intending visitors to the Cheviot sale, and it was announced that all wishing to purchase tickets providing them with coach room and accommodation at this - fixtnre must apply to us at next Thtwald sale on 2lst inst.
