ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held last evening. Present— The Mayor and Counoillors Williamson, H. ' Friedlander, Bird, Maofarlane, Scott, Outhbertson, and Brooke, mayor's statement. The Mayor said that the debit balanoe at the Bank was £1318 12a lid. The amounts whioh had been received sinoe last meeting were : — Rates,, £3 12s ; rents of reserves, £15; licenses, £9 ; library acoount, 3s ; sale qt earth, £3 ; sale of iron pipes, £118 16s. Total £149 115. The amount of rates outstanding was £324 19s. COBBESPONDENOE. Letters were read (1) From the Assistant. Controller and Auditor requesting payment of fee of £4 for auditing Borough aooounts.— Passed for payment.— -(2) Circular from Railway Reform Leagues — Acknowledged. — (3) From Mr A. Harrison requesting permission to burn rubbish.— Granted aubjeot to the usual conditions. — (4) From PaymasterGeneral advising payment of aooount for iron pipes. — (5) From Mr W. J , Crooks requesting that his name be placed on the burgess roll m respeot of certain sections oooupied by him. —(6) From Mr H. .Friedlander requesting permission to burn rubbish. — Granted snb* jeot to the usual conditions. ÜBBABY. The Library Committee submitted a list of books whioh they had deoided to prooure for the Library. The aotion of Jthe',Oommittee was approved. engineers' beport. The Engineers reported as f ollowb : - Work m Domain : The running track on the , Sports ground is nearly completed as far as the olaying is concerned, but we find a diGoulty m obtaining an adequate supply of oinders. The new water-race is finished, and the water is now running direct into the middle reservoir. The branoh raoe into the Hospital grounds haß been commended, and Borne progress has been made with the new dam for the swimming baths, as well as m forming the eastern side of tha lower and deep portion of the baths.— The labor gang bas been engaged m sundry maintenance works, watering streets, attending to the water supply, etc — The tender oi Mr Joseph Leggatt for various carpenter's work and painting at £31 5s has been aaoepted. The report was adopted. INSPEOTOR OF NUISANCES. The Inspector of Nuisanoes submitted a report. In one instanoe he had communicated with the solicitor as to an alleged nnisanoe. STATUTOa? HAW-HOLIDAY. Or Cathbertson asked whether the Counoil reoognised Saturday or Wednesday afternoon as the statutory half-holiday under the Females and Young Persona Employment Aot. The Mayor said that the Gounoil had not specified any day for the half-holiday. Or Guthbertßon gave notice to move at qext meeting that the Oounoil deolare Wednesday afternoon to be the statutory half-holiday under the Aq^, * &AUOTA? OBOSSINGB, Or Williamson drew attention to the. unsatisfactory state of the railway oroasinga. The roads were m good ordor, hut the foolways were id muah naad of attention. On his motion it waa deoided to approaoh.the railway authorities on the matter. BUBBISH Councillor Soott asked the Counoil to direot that for the future any persons 'burning rubbish should inform the Fire Brigade of the date on whioh their intention would be Carried out. Tha Gounoil agreed with the suggestion, and it was resolved to make it one of tha conditions on whioh permission to burn rub* bish would bo granted. EUJNEWN EXHIBITION. A matter m oonneotion with the grant of £10 made by the Oounoil towards the funds of the looal Exhibition Committee cropped up. The Oounoil m granting the'money did so under an impression that the Aot of last session gave it power to do so, but it now appeared that what tho Aot did was to give the Oounoil power to spend money m beopming itßelf an exhibitor. ; It was thought that unless the matter were arranged m Btriot aooordanoe with the letter of the Aot, the Audit Department would drop on the Oounoil for a refund., The Mayor said that tha matter was one whioh admitted of easy settlement, and he undertook, to. arrange it. As the Prinoq of Wales' Birthday this year falls on a Saturday, whioh wbb felt to be an inconvenient day, the Oounoil fixed the holiday for Friday, November 8. , rAYMHNTB. Aooounts amounting to £58 17s 3d wero passed for payment, and the Counoil adourned.
