THE MELBOURNE LAND BOOM.
SWEEPING* CHARGES. [Peu PEEBB ASSOCIATION.] London, January 12. The " Statist " warns English inv,eators againot the land inflation m Victoria. It publishes a letter from a prominent man m Melbourne, stating that m companies formed for the purchase of land, vendors became provisional directors, and subsequently retired. Members of Parliament were involved m the affair, and new railways were authorised with a view to buying land, only to re- sell at a profit. The letter oharges Government with utilising knowledge of State secrets, and asserts that there was no one m Parliament to expose the transactions, as most of the members were m the swim, A private letter received by tho manager of a leading Bank predicts that a collapse worse than the Bank of New Zealand is impending.
