A SENSATIONAL ARREST.
FIREARMS USED.
Wellington, September 5. I A sensational arrest of an alleged norse stealer waa made at Kapakapanul near Te Oreore last night. A young man named Jamea White has been " wanted " some time on two charges of horse stealing, and yesterday the police received information that a man anawering the description was working m the district mentioned. Constables Slight and Oarr departed to the place and m one of the buehmen's tents found White, who took np a double barrelled gun and threatened to shoot Slight if he advanced. White declared that he would not be taken alive, that he had been hunted enough by the police already, and that if they wanted him they would have to take him dead. Several tlmea he ,was called upon to iay down hia gun and surrender, but each time, according to Slight, he distinctly refused to do bo. He slowly stepped backward towards hla tent and Slight followed him ap. Finally White stood still and said that if the Constable advanced another step he would be shot. Just at this moment White made half a turn to the right as though startled by some noise behind him. Slight wbb then able to see that the gun was fully oocktd and capped and he fired two revolver shots m quick sucoesnion at the hammers m the hope of disabling them but missed them. White quickly recovered from hia surprise and waa again raising the qua to his shoulder when Slight fired once more and wounded him on the left wrlat. This caused him to drop the gun and as he stooped m the endeavor to pick it up again, Slight pouDoed upon him and with the aid of Constable Oarr scoured him. The two offioers kept guard over their prisoner all night, attending to his injury as best as they could and this morning they brought him through the bush to the railway line where they caught the train to town, As the bullet had been extracted White was taken before the Justices and remanded for 8 daya. He was then removed to the hospital and when sufficiently recovered will be lodged m gaol. White is a brother of the man convicted of stealing the yacht Dido and whioh was sailed down to Lyttelton some time ago, and he was on board at the time,
