Nine thousand quarters of Victorian wheat, September shipments, sold at 395, and 5100 quarters of Adelaide, August shipment, at 40s. The following private telegrams hare been received m Christchurch :— " The market has been very firm for the last few days, consequent on bad weather retarding harvest operations. We have sold all. your afloat cargoes. Weather has been unsettled, but now looks better." " The cargo per Rudolf Josefy has been sold at 86s 6d. The market is firmer but we expect a reaction." " We could sell parcels by steamer m preference to other business." The following telegram, dated Calcutta, August 24th, has been received : —"Good demand for sacks. Cannot make firm offers. Tonnage scarce." The following is the copy of a private message received yesterday under date London, August 24th, referring to the London freight market :— " Bates of freight are rising every way by sail and .steam. Advances to Australia have taken place to the extent of from 25 to 50 per cent." A private telegram received m Christchurch from r Newcastle says }— ." We have no vessels to offer at present, but if the strike continues may be able to do so later on "
