WAKANUI ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of this Board waa held on Saturday. Present — Messrs M Bruce (Chairman), W. T. LIU and J. Brown.

CORRESPONDENCE,

Letters ware read— (l) From ratepayers 1 In Sea field district asking to have Le J Breton'a road tussocked. The Surveyors were lmtrooted to call for tenders for next l meeting.— (2) From Mr 0. W. Tamer ' having reference to the Wakanal creek ' sod referring the Board to tho Asbbarton Poanty Council. — It was resolved "That t this Board h of ODlnion that the two rbridges over the Wakanol creek, con- 1 ■tructed at the cost of this Board, with a \ ■pan exooedlng 30 feet each should b) c miintained by the Oonnty Council and I charged to the general aosoant, for the following reasons:— Becauee the Oonncll is i one of the pieties to the diversion of the t Aehborton river from its natural coarse, c canting Injury to the district roads and i great Inconvenience and expense to rate- i payers of this district, through their having to maintain thcß9 and other smaller bridges over this new branch of the waters of the Ashbnrton river ; beoause the action of the Oounoll m maintaining all suoh bridges m other road districts, •ni whioh were only partly paid for by the Bond Boards, seems manifestly unfair to this Board, and more so ib no bridge wonld be over the Wakanal creek but for fcbe diversion of the Ashburton river. That thli Board will no longer allow its roads to be flooded is they have been ' lately, nor expend any farther sum on the repairs of any bridge with a span exceeding 30 feet ; rather than do bo, it will me every means m its power to prevent the river from being turned oat of its natural coarse to the detriment of the , roads of the district. Brown was willing to sell land for a roadway to connect the Hirer road — It was resolved to reply that the Board cannot take any aotlon at *i*«*ent, pointing out that they bad some short time ago need every means to get Mr Wilson a road, and that as yet Mr S. B'own had not expreesed his willingness to sell land to the Board j tn fact, m his l«st comtnnnieation to the Board, he deelleed to do bo. surveyor's eeport. The Sort eyor's report was read as f ollows: — (1) Sesfield road. — The tußSocking on this road has been completed; the repairing of road is being proceeded with and is near completion. The maintenance man will then proceed to the Chertsey road. (2) Wright's road. — We have inspeoted this short piece of road, complained of at last meeting ana find that it is very rough for traffio and reoommend that it be formed its fall length about 20 chains. (3) Buckley's road.— We have also inspected portion of this road between Seaview district and Seafield. We consider that portion between Jones' road and Seafield road whioh carries a good amount ot traffic should be lormed, the distance is about 183 chains. (4) Milton road.— We have had culvert on this road extended a distance of 16 feet each Bide. (5) Wakanni flat.— Though the river was m heavy freßh last week we have tp report that no damage was done to roads, The maintenance man's diary lies on the table. Olanse 2 — Surveyors were Instructed to call tenders for next meeting. WATER RACES ACROSS ROADf. Tt was the opinion of the Board that water races crossing roads, whether by means of fords or culverts, should be under the control of the Boad Board, and it was decided to again ask the Oooncll to do this, pointing out the saving and ex* pedienoy of so doing. cochbank's road, Mr W. Coohrane waited on the Board, and drew their attention to the Insufficiency of the conorete culvert across ibli road to carry off storm water.-— Mr Brown and the Surveyors were requested to ice to the matter. MCQUIRV'S ROAD. It wag decided to take dowa the fences Bonth-aast of this road, and hßve rises levelled and hollows filled up. HAHPSTEAD AND WAK&NUI BOUNDARY ROAD A deputation consisting of Meßßrs Mayo, Fawcett, and G. Andrews waited on tbe Board with regard to some arrangement feeing made as to the oontrol and maintenance of the roads.

After some discussion it was mutually •greed that the boundary road* be under the control of the Wakannl Bond Board, with the exception of Trevor's road, which shall bd under the control of the Harnpstead Town Board ; thai the cost of maintenance be as follows : — Tho Seafield «nd Wakanul roads : two-thirds to be t>orn« by the W»k«nul Road Board and ©ne-tblfd by the Hampstead Town Board, the other roadi to be borne by eaoh equally.
