A public meeting for the parpose of considering the desirability of proposing a redaction of tho Government estimates was held this evening when it waa resolved th*t while duly appreciating the redaot lon of Government expenditure already made, this meeting is of opinion that very much larger reduo ( iom, aay £200,000, can and ou^bt to be made, and so avoid the neoesaity of any large increased tazation ; (2) that m order to facilitate economical ad* ministration the present cumbrous system of Government should be modified to suit the tax-pay Ing power of the oountry. Some discussion ensued on a motion by Mr ,G. M Reed " That In consider atlon of the fioanolal position of the oilony and the necessity for farther retrenchments the school age shoald be raised to seven years, and free education ehoald end with the fourth standard." Two men, Wm Noble and J. Stewart, were charged to-day with robbery of £102 18s 9d, property of P hJrodle, proprietor of the Naval and Family Hotel. The case was remanded for a week. Wellington. Mrs Williams, an old resident of Cromwell, bas been arrested for the murder of an illegitimate child of her daughter's. At a Bankruptcy sitting of the Supreme Oourt to-d»y, Alfred Brunt on, Christian minister, cnme up for order of discharge, which was opposed on behalf of Mrs Dftlbedyhl. His Honor said he ooold not shut his eyes to this fact, that this bankruptcy had been brought about by the dtreot misconduct of the bankrupt. He bad published a Übbl, and damages were •warded therefor, and it was In consequence of the publication of that libel, and In order to escape the damages that were awarded, that he filed, and he now came to the Oourt and asked to be discharged. If at an earlier date the bankrupt had tendered an apology the aotlon would not have beep brought. It was reasonable that Mrs Dalbodyhl shoald be put In the same position bb before the ao'ion was brought, and be would suspend discharge till that was done. Invkroakoill, June 25. The body of a man was found In the Mataura river to-day. It is supposed to be that of a man named Jamleeon, who disappeared from Gore after committing an assault on April 3rd, and whose coat was afterwards found In a hedge. Tho body was fully dressed except the coat. Meetings of ratepayers In the Waimea Plains railway district were held at Rlveridale and Lumeden on Saturday night, when it was resolved to ask the Government, before imposing rates proposed by the District Railways Act Amendment Bill, to supply a statement of acooontfof the railway, tho ratepayers being ef opinion that services were oharged to the Hoe which have no conoeotlon with it ; and that II is not credited with all it turnings It was stated that wool oould be sent from Lumsden to Danedin via InveroargiH for 4d leva per bale than if sent ftoroii jo Gore by the Waimea Hue, which saves fifty-two miles of railage.
