SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Thursday. Present— Messrs Coster (chairman), Lyttelton, Stringfellow, Mulligan, and J, Tamer. OLEtr's KBPORT. The Clerk's report was read and considered. He reported that all over the distriot gorse was to be found growing on the roads. Final noticas bad been given to occuplors on the Oherksey Boundary road to clear the same at once, as the contractor was delayed on his contraot. _ Unloßß this road was cleared at once it would be for the Board to do it at ocoaplera' expense. Water race* through plantation were receiving attention now the water w?s turned cff. The echedule of duties for Pi-andkeeper as drawn up was approved of by the Chairman. There had been many overflow!' g wator races lately, doing some damage to the roads, and some of tho crossings were badly out op with tbe traffic. Some person had erected a fenoe on the road near the Na'lve Reserve, and the oomrao tors had been sent to remove it r It was res lived " That Mr Friedlander be given notice that be must not allow hid men or contractors to oamp on or erect fenoea on roads near the Maori Reserve." It was also decided that the cos!: of removing the fenoe as at present erected should be charged to tbe person who had done the damage. It was resolved that the County Engineer be written to, oalllng his attention to an ''overflow of water on Main waring* road wbioh is doing damage. It was roaolvod that occupiers of land be given notice to clear the roada o e gorse, also that the same be adveit'aad. The Obalrman and Mr Strlngfellow were appointed to Inspect the road near Ohertsey level crossing, and report at the next meeting. The Clerk was instructed to put men en to clear gorse from roads if the work were not done seven days after giving notice. It wns deoldad that all rates cot pad by 16th Juno should bo snod for without farther notice, the Clerk to send out notices and advertise to that, effoct. It was decided to oil tenders for cutting plantation fences, eto, m portions as before, to be In for next meeting. Mr Lyttelton was requested to report oa a road near Bo'mslea OORRESirONDENCB. Correspondence was read from County Oonooll concerning resolutions rt dividing the county and doing away with Road Boards, and asking the Board's opinion. — It was resolved to reply that the Board would take etepa to ascertain the feelings of the ratepayers, and pending th*t would prefer not to express an opinion as a Board. The County Oounoil wrote stating that £22 Us 63 hid been apportioned for tbe purchase of poisoned grain for the distriot. A number of the village settlors wrote asking tho Bjard to erqaire about the ona-third of moneys receivable on the sale of village settlement sections. — On tho motion cf Mr Lyttelton, seconded by Mr Strlnqfellow, it was decided to write to the OommUoioner of Oroirn Lands asking him to please furnish tha Board with a detailed statement shewing the sections sold, the amounts paid for them, and the refunds for this district, for the Information of the settlers. Mr Ot. J. Webster wrote for a testimonial for survey works done. — It Wftß resolved that ibe Chairman Khould be requested to give Mr Webster n testimonial for the efficiency of the work done by him for the Board. Mr W. Ivory wrote asking that his name be taken c ff the ra*e roll. — Hosolved to oomply with the request when tbe rates wore paid on the land lately occupied by him. The Inspector of Audit w/ote asking for balance-sheet as audited by Mr OHivler — The Clerk sUtod that copies had been lent. Mr M. Brown wrote asking for paymen' for extra work on his contract. — The Clerk tras instructed to report on some to tbe next meeting, Mr J. Irwin wrote atklng for hills on Mltcham Road to be reduced,— The Clerk and Mr Lyttelton were requested to Inspect and report to tho next mooting. Mr V, A . Pyko wrote oalllng attention to storm water lying near the B»nk of New Zealand.— lt was resolved to ralno the road and make an open crossing, Messrs Pyke, Turner and Hardy wrote nfaklng if the Board would take stops to have a light kopt burning at the railway crossing. — It was resolved that the railway authorities be written to m terms of the letter.
