THE TARIFF PROPOSALS.

. — * The Napier and Nelson Chambers of Commerce are opposing the new Tariff. The former thinks the existing tariff 1b ' sufficiently protective, and the latter, < while agreeing with moot points m the j now tariff, considers the primage duty < objectionable, and suggests a tax on sugar j or other merchandise Instead. The Nol- I son Fire Brigade asks other similar bodies to unite with them m opposing the tariff on hose, etc. The Invercarglll Chamber has appointed a Committee to consider the ' tariff. ; (per press association.) * Wellington, Jane 2 ; < The Wellington Ohancber of Commerce has passed the following resolution : — "That it Is not advisable to discuss the tariff until the House has determined whether it is posslblo to do without extra taxation, and while not admitting that It : la necessary to have additional taxation ' the Chamber is of opinioa that the tariff ] should not be amended m the direotion I proposed, as it raises so many compile*- I tions and issues. The Chamber believes , that a saving can be effaoted m the cost of education and the better management of the nvllwaya. which will render further ! taxation unnecessary, and that the pro- ' posed one per oent primage duty is a most vexatious Impost, and will give riie to needless trouble to importers and Gastoma officials, and is out of all proportion to the money to be raised."
