Sydney, M^y 30. Mr Salamons, m moving the second reading of the Chinese Bill m the Legislative Council, quoted from a communication from the Chief Justice to the Premier to the effect that during his circuit m the country districts he noticed that the critical cases with which he had to deal were attributable to a large extent to Chinese camps m various parts pi the colomy, which were frequented by whites of a low character, especially women. He suggested thstt measures should be taken \q preclude women visiting Chinese camps, except such as were legitimately married to the Chinese ; and further, that restrictions should be placed on the marriage of Chinese to white women.
