Sydney, April 23.

Those engaged m the rescue work of the Salvation Army give terrible*^nd distressing accounts of the immorality prevalent m this city. During the last two years the society have passed through their hands between two and three hundred females, whose ages ranged from 12 to 25 years. Some of the very worst classes of children, were those of tender years. The society m their report express the opinion that the numerous dens m the city are the source of so much vice. The Rabbit Conference has decided upon a station near Wilcannia as the site for conducting experiments with M. Pasteur's scheme of microbes. A fire at Gunnedah, 265 miles N.W. of Sydney, destroyed eight buildings, including the barracks of the Salvation Army. The police are taking proceedings against Bola*nd and Carroll, who fought for the light weight championship on Saturday. Sir Henry Paikes has received no official communication from the Colonial Office with reference to his memorandum on the Chinese question. The Chief Secretary states it is unlikely the negotiations for the establish ment of a federal quarantine will succeed, as the Governments of the different colonies cannot agree on the apportionment of the expenses,
