Among the incidents related of narrow escapes m the late buah firea is the following remarkable experience : — Two settlers named J. and 0. Bargerson.. of Makareta, were bq' intent on saying their property when the fire came down upon them that they did not notice that they were being hemmed m by the fire, and they used up all the water thay had ahoat, and then they threw some milk that stood m a bucket on the fl imes and turned, too late, to fly. The fire hemmed thorn m on every hand, and although the creek waa only two chains away they could not reach it. Some neighbors came and tried to help but tho fire and smoke beat ih 9m back, and it really aeemed »s If the poor fellows inu'at be burned to death. They strove to ooyor their' bodies v/fth- earth,- and kept their faces close to tHp ground for a breath of air, At last the heat became so intolerable that m anothor ton minuses tney must have Buocumbed but at this critical juncture r*ia oame ia torrents, and the brothers were aaved. Tney were both quite blind next morning, b"t had recovered yesterday The (Vtaynr to-night received a telegram from the Norwegian, Swadisbj I>snlph, and German Consuls, who are at 1 Noriewood, warmly thanking tho public ' here for their prompt and liberal aaaistanoe to the burned out settlers. Auckland, Maroh 21. The Danißh jDanaul m Auckland, .Mr V, Johannaan, has started a subscription for tho relief of the sufferers by the late disastrous Ore at Norsewood. Waipawa, Maroh 22. A meeting lant night decided to form a Central Oommitteo, poroprising the Mayors and Chairmen* of the various County Councils and Boroughs m Hawke's Bay, to relieve the sufferers by the Norsewood fire. It was resolved to appeal to tho people of the colony for subscriptions, and satisfaction was expressed at the atepa already takon la Wellington, Christohurcn, and Auckland, and it was earnestly hopad ail other centres would naalafc. A largo sum will be required to alleviate the distress and put the people back m homes of the humblest description. The Committee also hoped that all the papers m the oolony will give the fullest publicity fco, a.ll telegita^a on the eubjaot and # that by this meana the colony .> will bp stirred to sympathy. Delay will mean iaotease of misery as owing to the a'tttnde of the settlement, winter comes on early and la always vigorous. Subscribers may rely pn judicious administration of the fund by responsible and (representative men. :
