Mr Samuel gave notice of a Bill to reft»l the Triennial Parliaments Act, 1879. A number of petitions were presented praying for State aid to denominational •ckoolf. WIfITPOET XABIOB WOBKS. Ur Mitshelaon moved that a Select Committee be appointed to consider what her the wcrks for the Improvement ef the Westport harbor have been hitherto canted on economically and tatisfactorlly by tbe Harbor Board. 3nd to report their opinion whether the present mode of carrying on the works shoold be continued •r other p'aos adopted ; also, whether the endowments of the said Board have been satisfactorily administered, the Committee to consist of Mr Dodson, Sir J. Ball, Messrs MoAnhar, McGregor. Or mosd, Riehwdson, W. D. Stewart, White, Withy and the mover. Mr Newman moved an amendment to add Greynvuth Harbor to tbe motion. Mr Gnlnness protested againßt the Amendment. After a long discussion the amendment was withdrawn and tbe motion agreed to. THE LATE ME. DOMETT. Major Atkinson moved—" That this House desires to take the earliest op* portonlty of recording ite einoere sympathy with the widow, family and friends ef Mr Alfred Domett m the great lobb they have sastained In the death of that gentleman, who not only during many jean rendered valuable pnblic services to this colony, bnt also m his admirable poatleal writings preserved interesting and valuable pictures of this country m Its early state and of its aboriginal race, which will prove of value and Interest to Few Zealandets m all times." Sir J. Yogel seconded the resolution, bearing testimony to the deceased gentleman's high character and attainments, and his conduct as a settler. Sir J. Hall and Mr Kerr having spoken m a similar strain, the motion was carried cnaoimoualy. THE MIDLAND RAILWAY. Major Atkinson said it would be within the recollection of the House that during the recent dleonesion on the Midland Bailway, a considerable expression of opinion wbb made that the matter should be given to » Select Commifctep. He wished now to state that tbe Government had taken the subj-ct intn consider) tion, and determined to ask tbe Hrnse to refer tbe business to a Select- Committee. He hoped that under tbe circumstances. and locking at the desirability of getting the matter disposed of as aonn oa possible, the House would consent to his moving Jill resolution without rot Ice. Hfs motion was, "'That a Select 0 mmittee be appointed to consider tbe amendments to the eonfcraot, and to report their opinion •I to whether all or any of them should be adopted " He would submit tbe names cf the Commutes durire tbe evening. In reply to Sir J Yogel, Major At. Idnson said he bad r.o objection to the Committee making suggestions. Sir J Yogel said be sbonld not oppose the motion, but he thought it would have been better to decide the matter m the Honse. The motion was agreed to.
