IMPLEMENTS.

I The show of implements this year was an exceptionally good one, and not the ; least pleasing feature was the number of j Improvements whloh have been mad» by farmers themselves. Meisra P, and D. i Duncan had about sixteen exhibit*, some of whloh bad been exhibited before, And -. some having had- improvements made j whioh experience suggested aa necessary. I The disc harrows manufactured by this firm have been altered slightly with a view to increased efficiency. This firm also exhibited a wool press whioh haa had several improvements made to it. They showed, also, a broadcast seed sower on the English principle of spoonfeed, the advantage of which .is that by adjusting the spoons -anything miy, be sown from turnips to beans without anything like thelnoldent trouble on changing the feed of other machines. A hajndy little machine is also shown, the Invention we understand of Mr Leadley, which- la in* tended to remove the straw of old ataoks and soatter it over a paddook, to aot aa manure, Instead of the straw being burnt, as is at present a prevailing practice, tiesars Booth and McDonald had ft number of exhibits on tbe ground Their model wind-mill has been muoh improved and Is now a handy and light contrivance. They showed also a new Invention, a machine to remove hair-grass and other seeds from grass seed. Among other novelties they showed a stripper with enlarged drum, Lay h'e patent wool press with several improvements made since last year, a new hay rake, and a twln^barrel tttfnlp cutter, with sin elevator to raise the turnips into a dray or other vehicle aa may be required, Meisra Reid and Gray had hardly such a large number of exhibits on the ground as they had last year, but they made a very good display. Among n ew exhibits were two wire strainers, the patents of Messrs Maofarlane and .Hamilton. These will catoh up . broken wires and . strain them and . they have the reputation of being im effijaoioua aa they are simple.. A garden chair with bronzed ends was also shown and also some of Donahue's, binding twine, ft Dunedin manufaoture. This twine: ia rapidly making Its way into favor and- we understand that a great deal was sold m this district last year. . Messrs B eld and Gray, also showed two threshing mills with traction engines. The former, whioh have been procured to- the order oC Mr Meaolam, have been improved m several particulars. The shakers have been extended and a third blast added ia order that the grain may be thoroughly o'eaned of all dust or Impurities before it goes on to the screen. , The top dressing riddles . have been made much wider and larger and the shakera considerably extended. These improvements have all been suggested by experience, and Mr Walker and- Mr Meaolam are confident that they will work most satisfactorily. Messrs Reid and Gray showed a reaper and binder of their own make whioh has been improved by all the shafting being made of a'combination of iron and steel, which has the effect of making the machine both lighter • and stronger than would be the ease were only one of the meta's adhered to, Meßars Andrews and Boaven Showed a ohaffoutter of whioh the specialty Is tha low price chain driving gear, whloh ia reoommended as being preferable to the leather belting. 1 hey also show&dja grass cleaner with an arrangement for getting rid of hair-grass, a nuisance that is becoming so plentiful that steps have to be taken to deal with it effectually. Mr Ferriman also showed an Anglo-American drill, which has been In use for seven years and waa exhibited m preference to a new machine, In order that the staunoh qualities of the make might be recognised. He also exhibited Ford's Soonr and Lung Worm Mixture, a farmer's Invention, said to be highly efficacious, m proof of Which Mr Ford oan show a number of flattering testimonials. Three reapers : — The Wood, MoOormick and Deerlng were, shown by Messrs Ferriman,; Morrow Bassett, and Mason Struthers respectively. Several Improvements have been made' ; to eaoh, and they retain their old adn&er«. Messrs J. R, Steel and Baker and Brown had each a collection of looaily made vehicles, the palm being awarded to Mr Steel, who exhibited five nice vehicles, together with wheels for carta and drays and speoimens of wood used m carriage making.
