THE PANAMA CANAL.
The periodical rumours as to the m- .._ superable obstacles ia the way of the Panama Canal scheme are once moro m circulation, and no doubt they will be as categorically denied as usual by M.de Lesscps. On this occasion the ordinary natural difficulties m the way of excavation are augmented by a literal mountain. As the ' diggers remov* the earth m the great Culebra cut, the mountain on one side moves slowly but resistlessly towards them, and nothing but perpetual excavation can keep the ditch open. So enormous is the hill that no retaining wall could possibly hold it m its place, and its continual sliding into the waterway is the only prospect. This sounds like a huge Amoricaa joke, bat it ia reported on the authority of one of the engineers of the company, Thore are rumours that a further loan is contemplated m Paris, the cheapness of money more than its immediate necessity being the motive ; but the mountain tnuat first be explained away.
