FATAL FIRE.

Blenheim, August 27. A fire atttended with fatal conaequeaoea oooarred at 7.30 this morning, the bouth Star Hotel being burned to the ground. The firs when discovered had a good hold of the building, and the brigado with the s f eam engine oonld do nothing but extinguish the burning embers. The origin of the fire ia a mystery. All was right when the landlord retired about niidvght acd all lights were out at that hour. He slept on the ground floor and was awakened by a lodger at 1.30. He made an effort to get upßtdra to rouae the inmates but the heit and Bmoke prevented him getting further than the landing. There were a good number of boarders m the house. Those sleeping upataira had great difficulty In getting out. No fire escapes were provided, and the bed-clothes were brought into requisition as a means of esoape; ■ Richard Winter, editor of the " Malborough Times," who jumped out of an upotair window, sustained a compound fracture of the leg and was much singed and bruised Another lodger named David Henderson, an elderly man, loat hia life. The remains of his body were found at daylight and onveyed to the morgue.' Very little was saved. The insurance on the building wai |£650 iv the Eqnitable, reinsured for £300 m the Standard. The furniture was insured for £100 m the Sjath British, and the stock for £50 m the Bame office. Later. An inquest will be held this afternoon on tha remains of David Henderson, who was burnt this morning by t>ie fire at the Sooth Star Hotel. Tbere have been reports of one or two others ni'.esing, but the most diligent isearoh revealed nothing further.
