GREAT FIRE AT AUCKLAND.
" ' -Auckland, August 25. A great fire occurred at Eden terrace this morning, causing loss over £6000. It broke out at 12.30 In a omall house occupied by Flowellyn, near the Elding beheol and fanned by a SB. gale, rxtended and Bpread across tbe street. It destroyed Sandall's two-story block, Hill a large two-story block following. Tha fire next spread to the adjoining side streets and before It was cheoked 20 dwellings and six shops were burned down. Tbe flames raged fiercely ov« two hours and swept an area of fonr aores square on which wooden buildings were closely built. There Ii no water supply m the district. The Bai»eße Corps and a detachment from H.M.S. Opal did good service Jn oheeklng the fire. Two shops m HillY block wars •= unoccupied. Three attempts bare been made to came incendiary fires m that bleok on previous occasions. A movement Ii oaY foot to have a water supply., foi the district. A loan was authorised lome time ago. .
