Two charges of larceuy against Eliza jeth Croton, an Inmate of ihe Timara gaol, were adjourned for a fortnight, the acoused being too ill to appear. UNREGISTERED DOG. TRACTION BNGIMB Robert Meaclara was charged with taking a traction engine across the Ashburton Traffic Bridge without having obtained a permit.— The defendant said that he had bean returning from Mount Somers on a Saturday night. Ho reaohed the bridge about ten o'oloolr and the County Council offices had c'osad hours before. If he remained where he was, on the other side of the bridge, he said that he would have been proiecuted for obstructing a thoroughfate, and he therefore thought it better to orons the bridge. — A fiae of 10* and costs was ii flioted. Zander was sworn m aa Interpreter. — Edward Morgan said that he and defendant had occupied the same room m the Home for two months. On Monday morning m getting out of bed got a knock on tbe head. Sobaffer had called witness ill names and complained of hie snoring. Saw Sohsffer had his trousirj on, and a stick m his hand. He rushed at witness and threw him down between the bed and the wall, and held him by the throat till one of the inmates re'eased him, Schaffor rushed at witness a second tlraa and witness found himself stabbed through the hand with a knife. Witnesi took hold of Shaffer and asked him if he wbb going to commit murder. Shaffer went away, and Mr Fox, the master, came. The r: om wa9 much blood-stained, and Morgan had blood on him also Took Morgan to witness's room, and found he was bleeding from his hand, and bound it up.— Constable D. Smart said that he arrested Scbaffer at the Home, and searched for the knife ÜBed, and found two small kniveß on a shelf. Prisoner said, "tbat is the knife," which is now produced.— Dr Trevor examined Morgan on Monday morning and found his right band had a penetrating wound near tbe wrist, from back to front The knife produced would cause such a wound. The patient is doing well, and the wound will probably nat do him any permanent injury. —Thomas Fox, master of the Home, said SohaflVr hid been m the Home since Ist February last, having been formerly m the Dunedin Refuge. He also corroborated the evidence of the previous witnesses concerning the affray, gave him to understand that the knife produced was the one that he stabbed Morgan with. Sohaffer suffered from epileptic fits, and was nnder medical treatment for them. — Gross* examined : The accused handed witness the knife produced and said it was the one he stabbed Morgan with. — The accused declined to say anything m hiß defence, and was committed for trial at the next sessions of the Supreme Court In Ohrlstohuroh on 3rd October naxt.
