ELECTION GOSSIP.
Wellington, July 23. Mr Walter Johnston, formerly a Minister of Publio Workß, is a probable candidate for one of the Oily electorates, m the Protection Interest, Grbymouth, July 24. Mr A. B. Gainnesß addressed tLe Paeroa electors last night. He met with a good reoeption. He declared himself a supporter of the Government, advooated that all means of retrenchment should bd exhausted before resorting to additional taxation, preferred a Land and Incometax before the Property-tax proposed by the Government, objected to Civil Service redaction by percentage system, and would rather amalgamate office?. He would maintain the preßent edooit'on scheme, but would oppose any vote for High Bobools, He would reduce the Legislative Council, makiDg it eleotive or nominated for sor seren years. He approved of Cußtoma duties, and was m favor of a modified Protection toward/) looal Industries, bat no increase on the necessaries of life. He was m favor of the village settlement scheme, and wanted a reduction m the defence vote, and the abolition of the Native Department, merging it m some other. Be received a unanimous vote of thanko and confidence. This is the first eleoilon meeting m the district. Over six hundred claims to be placed on the* roll have already been sent m. The nnmber of new voters is expected to fully reach 800 altogether, although a new roll was prepared last Auguat. Dunbdis, July 25. Mr James Macandrew will probably oppose Mr Larnaob. Mr Carncro»3 favors the Ministry and declares for Protection. Bible reading m. sahools, and Government loans to farmers. He would prefer to ace a tout Government without Sir Julius Yogel. He received a unanimous vote of confidence.
