THE SEAMEN'S STRIKE
Auckland, July 23. At a meeting of the Seamen's Union last night about sixty were present. They expressed themselves firm, and detarmined to fight the Northern S.S. Company to the bitter end. It was unani mously resolved, <( That the proper course to puraue m order to meet the action of the Northern Company fa to charter steamers and run against them." It Is rumored that some of the Union Com* pany's steamers aro available In the South. Ihe Collector of Customs has warned the Company they must comply strictly | with the law m the matter of manning the vessels. The Federated Seamen's Union has definitely determined to charter steamers ia opposition to the Northern Company, and have several vessels under offer here. They have made overtures to the j Dlreotors of the Northern Company, asking them within twelve hours to take back the Union men at old rates, and to refer the dispute to arbitration; The Directors refused to entertain the proposal, and extreme measures will be adopted.
