— — — « — - — Auckland, April 28. The body found at Qobaonville has proved to be that of Grant. Captain Bell, who came to New Zealand m 1839 died to-day. The deceased was the first white boy to land at Owhyhee, where Captain Cook was murdered. The City Oounoil to-night, by an overwhelming majority, refused permission to the Tramway Company to run cars on Sunday. The Earl of Aberdeen cables from Sydney to the local Committee that he will arrive here by the s.s. Walrarapa on Tuesday next. He expects to spend three weeks m the colony, visiting the Hot Lakes, etc , he and the Count ass returning to England by the next San Francisco steamer. A young man named M. Thompson, who out his throat at Ploton street, Ponßoaby, yesterday died about 6 p.m. from the ahooking wound Inflicted. Ho had been depressed, and tu^ject to deiuaiona, for a week. About midnight an alarm of fire was given at the Wh&u Lunatic Asylum. It proved to be m the carpenter's chop counected with the institution, a wooden buildlDg ap^rt from the main' block. Despite the efforts of the attendants, the carp&ntor'a shop and its contents were completely destroyed. Tho main building waß not m danger, and excellent order was preserved among the inmates of the Asylum, The cause of the fire is a mystery, and a strict enquiry la expected to be made. Tho Waitete contract of the Nurth Island Trunk Kail way will employ 200 meu for two yeara. New Plymouth, April 27. At the Supreme Court to-day John M'Olean was acquitted on a charge of an attempt to murder Fred Iredaleat flawara. It was alleged that tho proaecntor had cohabited with the prisoner's wife, finally \ Newland, a servant girl, was convicted of forgery aid sentenced under tho Firßt Offenders Aot to six months' probation. There are only three caeca remaining on the calendar. I A proposal is being made to amalgamate the Onehunga Ironworks, the Taranakt Ironworks, and the Mokau Coal Company for tho purpose of commencing smelting operations. Hopes are entertained of the success of the proposed trial of smelting at New Plymouth. Wellington, April 28. The Government intend to appoint a Board to enquire into tbe charges against Lieutanant-tJolonel Mahon, of Auckland.
