Napier, February 23. Nelson Bros, announce that killing will be stopped for a short time at their works at Tomoana. They have now 28 ; 500 frozen carcases In store; and there is a difficulty m obtaining vessels for their shipments. This difficulty Is a very serious drawback, and has greatly Interfered with a f nil development of the trade; but notwithstanding, early as is the season, Messrs Nelson have sent away 90,000 oaroases.

The Chairman of the Education Board has given notice of motion as follows :— " That with a view to facilitate the found ing and establishing of a University College m Wellington, the teaching staff of the Norrcal School be given three months' notice and that the Normal School thereafter be abolished, on the understanding that the funds so realised be employed to found a University Chair In the said Wellington College." Mr O. O. Howard Principal of the Training College, has received three monthi' notice, terminating his agreement.
Admiral Tryon has expressed Wnmlf favorable to stationing two war vessels m New Zealand if New Zealand contributes her quota to the proposed general scheme of naval defence of the colonies. The Admisal considers thj demand of lho Government m this respoot a reasonable one, but of course the matter would have to roceive the faaotion cf tha Home Government.

When H.M.S. Nelson was hero last year the Union Company sent ten tons of Wbctport ccal aboard . Mr Boyd reported ao favoiably on it that the Admiralty has just sent orders to take a largo quantity next trip, and 700 tons have been ordered. Mr Boyd thinks that if he is able to report as highly upon this as on the smaller quantity the Admiralty will purchase large quantities and forward them to Australian depots for the sole use of men-of-war on this station.
Hokitika, February 23. The dead body of a man named Arthur Faiquhßr was found at Crooked River on the north bank of the Teremakao, near Lake Brunner, thirty miles from Kumara, yesterday mornbg. There were no marks of violence, and is supposed to hare resulted from natural causes.
Dunedin, February 23. Mr Maoandrew, M.H.R., met with rather a serious accident while proceeding home to-day. The howe he was driving bolted, and Mr Macandrew was thrown oct, receiving a tevera shaking. No bones »ppear to bo broken.
i Jnveroargixl, February 23. An Inquest was held t >day on the body of a man found In the Matauta river, but the result his not reached town. It Is s»id that the Rev Mr Hall is of opinion that the body is that of his eon, who went out to Inspect land that he had taken np on the 29ch October, and has not been seen since ; also that the socks on his feet are darned with woret?d of the Bamo shado as some fornd m Hall's tent. Hall bad a gun with him, and the body is said to bear a gun shct wound.
