NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE.

The following is wired from Auckland to the Ohristohuroh Telegraph of Toes day : —

Two warders have been temporarily suspended for allowing an Evening JBell reporter to escapa from Mount Eden Gaol yesterday during the hour following Ike exeoution of Oaffcey and Perm. It Is the law In relation to executions that no person present is to be permitted to leave the gaol until the execution has been completed and the necessary medical certificate given. This means about an hour's delay. So the reporter was placed m the unpleasant position of having to decide between obedience to th« )air acd his duty to the public The instincts of his profession being strong on him, he determined to serve the public, and io he simply " broke gaol." Making a rush for it, he managed to get ont. Bafore the anthorlties had awakened to the gravity of the position he was gone, and a oab being In readiness he was driven away to his office. The ttate of consternation within the walls when tba eßcspe was discovered was something dreadful, and the other reporters, penned up like wild beasts trapped, were furious. An Instant pursuit by the warders was ordered, bat the wheels of the reporter's chariot were too swift, and the warders were left m the back ground. The BtU last night thus apologises — " We apologise to the gaol authorities and to the law for the Improper conduct of our representative, and though we have the greatest reverence for law, we did not feel justified m withholding (he spoils of war, and to extras were issued m thousands all over the city, whilo tho representatives of our contemporary were kicking- their heels within the walls of the gaol. We aro frte to admit that it was the result neithar of negligence nor inattention to duty on the part of either the gaoler or warders. It was simply superior jonrnaHitic enterprise."
