About two o’clock this morning a two storey wooden block of buildings in Synods street, cor slstlng of two shops and dwelling houses, was burnt to (he ground. The fire originate! in the shop occupied by Mr John McOarroll, linen draper, spreading to that of 7. Speddl.ig woollen draper. All the inmates, including t! ree little children, escaped in safety Ths t >tal damage amoants to over £1503, very lit:le being saved. The building, which belonged to Mr Wrl.ht, confectioner, Queen street, was insured for £550 in the South British, and Mr Mc f ’arroll’s stock for £2OO In the Norwich Union.

The Government sent their ultimatum to the cable Company on Saturday. The Postmaster-General has given them notice that New Zealand will not supply present accomodation and will iropo e terminal charges if the rates a f e raised. If the ordinary rates are left unchanged and press rates are reduced to three pence per word on a guarantee from the press to supply revenue equal to the average of the last three years, Sir J, Vogel offers to give twelve months’ notice before undertaking the new cable A Futile Search. At Wbodville on Saturday a large party thoroughly searched the tush and adjoining swamp at Baihata but failed to fi id the least trace of Wibber. No funher search wili be made
