A CLAIM FOR DAMAGES.
Auckland, October 18 It has transpired that Mr G. F. Snerwood who recently went to Sam'a in connection with land claims and who returned by the mail steamer Mararo, was under arrest on board the American man-of-war Mohican. He was arrested by a party of blue jackets, while on board the steamer Explorer, at the instance of the American consul Greenbaum He was there sent ashore without lagga e. Finally after nearly two days’ cetention ha was taken by the Mohican and placed on board the mail steamer. No charge was made against him, but profuse regrets were expressed prior to his liberation. Mr Sherwood la an English subject, and was for over 16 years a leading man in the Taranaki provincial district, taking part in the Provincial Gonncil, County Council, and other bodies. He has complained on the subject of his arrest to tbe English Government, and leaves for London shortly to prosecute a claim for damages against the United States Government.
