The winners of >he tots mount their horses in turn, and have to run tho gauntlet ot the side whose members are on foot, each of whom except the captain has an indiarubber or other light ball Tho first player on (he mounted side starts efi from a post on which is a trap and ball ; he knocks the ha 1 up into the air and goes on his journey. The captain of the other aide, who is stationed near the starting post, tries to catch the bail, or to pick it up and hit the retreating player on the back with it; if he does either, the latter is “ont,” if he does not, the rest of the dismounted side, who are posted around the ring with a space between them for tho mounted p'ayers to pass between, try to hit him on the back with a ball as he passes, or rather when be has passed A hit pots the player *ont,” tie dismounted side t ke the field, mount their horses, and do as their opponents have done.
