AN EPIDEMIC OF FIRES

An epidemic of tire seems to have again broken out Yesterday morning an unocpied bouse in Douglas street, Po 'Sonby, belonging to B njamin Archer, was burned down. It was an old building of not much value. At 11 a m yesterday a fire was found on the premises of Eagletan, hai- dresser, Queen street, but was suppressed before a great deal of damage was done. Insurances—Premises, £4OO ; stock-in trade, £3OO, in the South British. About 3am |tj day a dwellinghouse and boot factory, College Road, Ponsonby, belonging to Mooro, were destroyed by fire. The premises being extensive and two storeys in height caused a large body of flames, and it was feared that the residence below, occupied by Moore, sen , would also go. Fortunately the firemen were able to save it, but Matthew Morris’s dwelling, with furniture, and the boot factory were burned to the ground, nothing of consequence having been saved. The building was insured for £6O in the Imperial and the furniture for £2OO in the same office, while the stock was insured in the London and Lancashire for £IOO. The total loss is estimated at above £I2OO The origin of the fire is unknown, and Moore oan throw no light on it. He states he was awakened out of his elsep. and found the place fall of smoke and flames. He had hard work to get the children out. A house belonging to Vizard, miner, Coro mandel, has been burned down, with furniture, stores, etc., including a quantity of gunpowder and dynamite. The fire is supposed to have originated in a wooden chimney.
