The football match, Auckland v New South Wales, took place this afternoon at Newmarket. Three thousand people were present. There were nine mw men in the Auckland team, only six being representatives, and they wt-re lighter than the Sydney team. There was some delay in starting the game; end Gardiner and Wells Auckland) not showing np were replaced, by Thos Henderson and Jordan, Ci ttir umpired for Auckland, and McArthur for Sydney, Thos Mackey be«; referee. Meldrum got a try, wh ch Lecky convert id into ag<A I. Kyan got a second try, and took the kick, but a pos • resulted. Pollard got a mark, and I’y n took the p ace kick, bu - the bill passed fi e yards to the right cf the prs’ Shortly after Mills got another try for Auckland. Lecky took the kick, but failed. The term closed with Auckland nine points, New Sooth Wales, nil In the second spell New South Wa s played much better, and Auckland had repeatedly to force down Just at the close Whiteside made a splendid run right throught the New South Wales men, and touched down behind the goal. Play ended with the score -Auckland eleven, Sydney nil. Among the Auck landers Byan, Whiteside, Madigan, and Lecky distinguished themselves, and for Sydney Shew, Walker, Bell, and Bridge.
