ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE

Tho ordinary monthly meeting ol the Ashburton School Committee was held at the Borough School last evening. Present—Messrs J. 0 Duncan (chairman) E. Dimant, W. J. Sdoosk Tiie Chairman apologised for tiie absence of Mr Elston.

BUILDING EXPENDITURE A letter was read from the North Canterbury Board of Education forwarding circular from Minister vf Education insisting nn expenditure of money granted under Public Works vote on new school buildings and additions and not on repairs to existing schools. ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATES, The Chairman stated that ho had conferred with the headmaster who had promised to sen! to Dunedin for samples' of attendance certificates. SCHOOL REQUISITES, The Chairman said that he had seen the headmaster with reference t> this subject, and he had expressed his willingness to undertake the sale of books and other requisites to the scholars. After some discussion the matter was left in the hands of the Chairman to obtain a price from the local stationers. REPAIRS. The Chairman said that he had arranged for certain alteration to one of the porches, as directed at last meeting. master's report.

The Master’s report was read as follows: The average attendance continued during the past month to be very low owing to nicKness, etc., but last week showed great Improvement, the attendance being aa follows, No. on roll, bogs 216, girls 212, Total 427; Average, boys 163-5, girls 149 3. Total 302.8. The school was last week inspected by Mr Walker, Drill Inspector. Be seamed well pleased with the work done in drill and the interest taken in the gymnasium. The report was adopted, and it was decided ta make application for the gymnastic apparatus mentioned by the matter as having been promised by the Drill Inspector. VISITING COMMITTEE Messrs Dimant and Silcock, the Voting Committee for tho past month, submilted their report. TREAT. In the absence of Mr*-Elston, the Chairman moved that the Committee take into consideration the adriiableneai of giving the srhool children a treat. Mr Dimant seconded the motion which was carried.

A Sufc-'ommittee was appointed, consisting of the Chairman, Messrs Dimant and Elston, to arrange the necessary prelimntrles. EXAMINATION. Mr Silcock obtained leave to defer his notice of motion with regard to the holding cf half-yeary txtrainatioaa till next meeting. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Craighead and Orr were ap. pointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. PAYMENTS. The ordinary monthly accounts were passed for payment. COMM 11 TEE’S P WEBS. Mr Dimant moved,“That this Comm ttee begs most reapecfully to suggest to the Board of Education the desirableness of allowing it to exercise to the full extent the powers conferred on it by the Education Act, 1*077.” Mr Silcock seconded tho motion.

The Chairman thought it wou d be time enough to bring forward the motion when the Board overstepped the limit of its powers. The motion was carried; and the Committeet adjourned.
