Melbourne, September 9
A dis'ardly attempt *o wreck a train has been made on the Melbourne-Qeelong line. Early on Saturday morning a ganger engaged in surveying the line discovered the fish plates of one of the rails had been tampered with, and an attempt made to remove the rail Just at the point where the line crosses a deep culvert. No doult If not discovered the resu’t would have been a disastrous accident. The police are actively endeavoring to trace tbe culprits. The Postmaster-General has concluded arrangements wh ireby the result of the Melbourne and Caulfield Caps can be received by any person resident in the colony by payment of sixpence on the morning of the race.
Tbe new lexsndra Theatre will be opened on Ist October, and the new Princess Theatre is rapidly approaching completion, so there is every probability that Melbourne will be well supplied with dramatic entertainments during the season In the Alexandra Theatre the London plan of having orchestra stalls has been adopted, and seats can be reserved all over the house, except the pit. The foundation atone of tbe New Princess, was laid on Sep-ember 7th by Mrs J. 0. Stewart, wife of the Mayor of Melbourne. The members of the Ministry and a large number of guests present were entertained by the contractors;
