Wellington, May 13
Mr Noble second ofg jer of the steamer Hawea, who jumped into the water to the assistance of hia Excellency the Governor at Onehunga on the 3rd mst. : has been presented by the Governor with a handsome binocular glass, bearing an inscription referring to hia gallant act. The annual report aud .balance-sheet of the Colonial Insurance Company shows that after transferring the reserve fund to the profit and loss account there remains a debit balance of £2793 4s 5d to be carried forward. To day.
At the City Council this morning, the Mayor, on behalf of the citizsna of Wellington, presented Mr Bryce with an address of welcome, and congratulated him on the success of hia action against Mr Kusden. Mr Bryce, in reply, expressed the pleasure he felt at the universal spirit of rejoicing that had welcomed his success He said that whilst being credited with a public motive, he must admit that his principal motive in taking proceedings was on account of his own family, although there was also some public motive. He was the better pleased if his action had rendered some service to the colony. A luncheon will be given to Mr Bryce next Saturday on bis return from WanganuL Mr C. J. Haselden has been appointed Under-Secretary of Justice.

This morning John McManus, 30 years of age, while removing basils from the revolving drum at Lightband Allan’s tannery, Woolston, was accidentally killed. A sack fastened round his shoulders caught In a shafting, which drew him off the ground and broke his neck. He had been a fellow stowaway on the Rimutaka with Henry who was burned to death on the Coptic a fortnight ago.

McGills flour mill at Milton was totally destroyed by fire last night. The fire started on the ground flior near the engine shed, and when discovered might have been quenched if a good supply of water bad been obtainable. Insurances ascertainable at present are LIOOO in London Liverpool and Globe ; and L6OOO in Union. Several policies have been allowed to lapse recently and insurances barely cover the loss on the grain, and flour in the mill, which was packed from floor to ceiling.
